Niall is a senior solicitor and experienced criminal defence lawyer with an emphasis on serious and complex crime. He defends in a wide range of cases including homicide, conspiracy to rob, conspiracy to steal, drug trafficking, firearms, dishonesty and sexual offences. His cases often have an international element. In recent years he has undertaken more fraud and business crime related work which has also led to him expanding his expertise to include money laundering and Confiscation Proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

He has considerable experience in advising clients in the police station and he conducts his own advocacy in the Magistrates Courts.

Recent/Ongoing cases include:

  • Operation Bilker - I successfully defended the only defendant acquitted in the importation of 530 kilos of Columbian cartel cocaine from Bogota to the UK by private jet, the largest such importation in recent years. This was an NCA prosecution and the value of the drugs exceeded £60m
  • Operation Ceratiid - Permission to bring two Judicial Reviews against the National Crime Agency on behalf of a UK businessman accused of the bribery and corruption of foreign officials in Antigua and Barbuda concerning the installation of lucrative solar contracts. Although both JR's were dismissed the NCA investigation is ongoing
  • Operation Wintergreen - Southwark Crown Court - Representing a city broker charged with Conspiracy to Defraud in a multi-handed £2.4m Carbon Credit ‘boiler room' fraud
  • Operation Rosewood - Southwark Crown Court - Represented a lead defendant in a large multi-handed conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering offences. This prosecution follows an investigation by the Metropolitan Police National Mobile Phone Crime Unit (NMPCU) into a telecoms company
  • Operation Greenyards - Southwark Crown Court - The Argentinean warrants fraud. Representation of an emerging markets trader charged with conspiracy to commit fraud and money laundering offences worth in excess of US $250 million
  • Operation Wayfarer - Worcester Crown Court - West Mercia Police Serious and Organised Crime Unit investigation into a multi million pound international conspiracy to import and distribute controlled drugs from China and India into the UK. Represented the principal and lead defendant
  • Operation Griffin - Multi-handed Conspiracy to Steal in Birmingham Crown Court. A large and organised crime group charged with stealing rhinoceros horns, antique Chinese porcelain and other artefacts to the value of £57 million
  • Operation Calcos - Kingston Crown Court - Multi-handed Conspiracy to Commit Robbery including the £1.5 million ‘burka heist' on The Wonder Room (watches) in Selfridges, Oxford Street, London
  • Operation Morguld - Kingston Crown Court - Multi-handed Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Burglary (armed) on the Breitling Store in the Westfield Shopping Centre, Stratford, London
  • R v. T - Portsmouth Crown Court - Joint CPS, FACT and UK Association of Interactive Entertainment prosecution for Infringing Copy Rights & Unauthorised use of Trade Marks
  • Operation Racehorse - Ipswich Crown Court - Historic Sexual Offending case involving a head teacher
  • Operation Cotter - St Albans Crown Court - Kidnap, Robbery, Blackmail and Possession of Firearms
  • Operation Rize - Acted for a client involved in an Investigation involving over 6000 safety deposit boxes being raiding which resulted in criminal & civil cash forfeiture proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 being brought
  • R v C - Southwark Crown Court - Successfully defended the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of a large international telecoms company on allegations of Money Laundering and Conspiracy to Defraud
  • R v B & C - City of London Police Station - A City of London Fraud Squad investigation into a suspected fraud by a network of city investment firms selling worthless carbon credits
